Social Media Optimization (SMO)

This is the use of social media networks to handle and grow an organization’s brand or product and show their online presence. As a digital marketing strategy, social media optimization can be used to increase awareness of new products and services, engage with customers, and mitigate potentially harmful messaging.

Types of SMO

1. On-site SMO

  • RSS feeds
  • Sharing/like buttons
  • User reviews about new products/services
  • Surveys
  • Employee engagement initiative, etc.

2. Off-Site SMO

Certain social media functions operate off-site, e.g:

  • Blogs
  • Participating in discussions
  • Joining social networks
  • Viral advertising
  • Press release, etc.

Social Media Marketing (SMM)

Social media marketing (SMM) (also known as digital marketing and e-marketing) is the use of social media – platforms where users build social networks and share information – to build a company’s brand, increase sales and drive traffic to its website.

Customer relationship management (CRM)

Compared to traditional marketing, social media marketing has several advantages, including the fact that SMM allows for two types of interactions that enable targeted customer relationship management (CRM): both customer-to-customer and company-to-customer. In other words: While traditional marketing primarily tracks customer value by capturing purchase activity, SMM can track customer value both directly and indirectly.
